My first Disney World memory isn’t of a castle or fireworks — it’s of a small boat floating along the water between Old Key West and what was then Downtown Disney. I had just turned six (I think), everything was Cinderella-themed, and the captain let me help steer because it was my birthday. That moment is followed by a cascade of other happy occasions, sustaining a love for Disney that’s grown and shifted through every stage of my life thus far.
Growing Up With Disney
As a kid, Disney meant pure excitement. I couldn’t wait for the rides, the shows, and the ice cream we would be getting at Ghirardelli. It was all about the energy of being there and the promise of adventure.
In my teens and early twenties, Disney days became marathons. I wanted to see, do, and taste everything to make the most of every dollar. Rope drop to fireworks — no breaks. Those trips were thrilling but exhausting, and I was grateful for every second.
Now, with more visits behind me — and as a travel advisor — I’ve learned the value of slowing down. There’s still joy in racing to a favorite ride, but I also appreciate an afternoon coffee by the castle or a leisurely resort dinner. Disney doesn’t have to mean running yourself ragged; it can actually be a relaxing escape.
Seeing Disney Through Professional Eyes
Becoming a travel advisor gave me a new appreciation for the “Disney bubble.” There’s an unmatched level of detail in how the resorts and parks are maintained, from the music woven into pathways to the way transportation eliminates the need to drive. And the service — cast members consistently go above and beyond. Yes, it’s an expensive vacation, but with the right plan, the value is there in every moment you don’t have to stress.
Looking Ahead: New Memories in the Making
As I look to future travel plans, I find myself anticipating sharing Disney with my daughter. Will she be wide-eyed with wonder the first time she sees Cinderella Castle or rides the carousel? Will the life-sized characters make her laugh, or cry? Those moments will make me see the parks in a whole new light. Strolling down Main Street, taking in all the sights, sounds, and scents as a family of three is going to be surreal. I can’t wait to watch her start building her own Disney memories.
That’s the beauty of this place: each life stage colors your experience more fully.
Tips for a Magical (and Stress-Free) Visit
Part of keeping the magic alive is knowing what to expect so you’re not overwhelmed once you arrive. A few essentials I share with clients:
- Plan ahead. From booking the right resort to dining reservations and park strategies, the earlier you prepare, the smoother the trip.
- Think about transportation. Staying on property often means you can skip driving and focus on the fun. But not all transportation methods were created equal. 🤫
- Use the tech tools wisely. The My Disney Experience app empowers you with mobile ordering, keyless resort room entry and interactive maps, saving precious time if you know how to navigate it.
- Pace yourself. You don’t need to do everything in one day. Set realistic expectations for your time and build in quiet moments so you can truly enjoy the details.
With good planning — or the help of someone who knows the ropes — you can enjoy Disney at whatever speed feels right for you.
