When I graduated college, my parents took our family on our first trip to Universal Orlando. After a lifetime of Disney vacations, this was completely new territory. There weren’t childhood memories tied to every corner — no “we always do this first” tradition — just a cautious curiosity.
The first thing I noticed was the atmosphere. It didn’t have the same brand of “pixie dust” I’d come to expect at Disney, but it was just as immersive in its own way. Even the city-like areas felt special because you could walk around without worrying about traffic or looking both ways. It struck me as a place where you could let your inner movie fan out, where the grown-up vibe didn’t cancel out the fun.
Seeing Universal Through Fresh Eyes
It’s interesting to return as an adult — and as a travel advisor — because I see the parks differently than I did that first time. Universal isn’t trying to replicate Disney; it excels in its own lane. Here, you step right into stories that don’t exist anywhere else: dragons breathing fire over cobblestone streets, mythical creatures lurking in lush forests, superheroes frozen mid-leap above a city skyline.
Islands of Adventure was my first favorite, and it still is. (Until I get to Epic Universe, that is. I anticipate it taking the lead!) The lands are based on stories that feel larger than life — not historical settings or “real” places, but worlds existing entirely in imagination. From the Jurassic Park gates to the colorful chaos of Seuss Landing, everything invites you to suspend disbelief. And then, of course, there’s the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, where Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade blur the line between fiction and reality, separate parks with overlapping themes.
Favorite Attractions & Entertainment
Universal is best known for its rides, but the entertainment deserves just as much credit. These are a few of my personal highlights:
- Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure – Hands down my favorite ride. It combines roller coaster thrills with an incredible sense of storytelling. If you can, take your first spin after dark.
- VelociCoaster – A must for adrenaline junkies, speed and loops and all the good things you’d expect in a newish roller coaster are represented here.
- The Horror Make-Up Show – A hilarious, behind-the-scenes look at special effects. I never skip it.
- The Tale of the Three Brothers – A little stage show tucked away in Diagon Alley that captures the heart of one of the most moving Harry Potter stories.
- CityWalk – The perfect place to bookend your day with live music, shopping, or a milkshake at Toothsome Chocolate Emporium.
I haven’t experienced Epic Universe or Volcano Bay yet, but I’m already excited — especially for Dark Universe. Universal keeps adding fresh layers, so even repeat visitors always have something new to discover.
Tips for First-Timers
Planning a Universal trip doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With a little preparation, you can make the most of your time while keeping the pace relaxed.
- Best Seasons to Visit: If you’re not tied to a school calendar, aim for September or early October to enjoy Halloween Horror Nights and fall décor. The week after Thanksgiving is lovely for holiday festivities without the heaviest crowds. January and February are also great for mild weather and shorter lines.
- Stay Onsite: The premier resorts — Portofino Bay, Hard Rock, and Royal Pacific — include Express Pass with your stay. That means you skip most standby lines without buying a separate add-on, and you’re just a short walk or boat ride from the parks.
- Keep Your Schedule Flexible: Universal doesn’t require the same level of minute-by-minute planning as Disney. You don’t need to book dining reservations 60 days out or strategize your route. You can be spontaneous — a huge perk if you’re traveling with older kids or teens.
- Embrace the Food: From themed ice cream at Florean Fortescue’s to sandwiches on coal black buns in Dark Universe, Universal’s dining scene is worth exploring.
Why I Recommend Universal
As a travel advisor, I love suggesting Universal to families with older kids, groups of friends, or anyone who wants something different. The parks are big enough to feel like an adventure, but compact enough that you’re not spending hours on buses. The themed resorts give you a comfortable home base, and the walkways and boats make getting around easy.
Most of all, Universal has its own kind of magic — one that invites you to let go of the everyday and dive into the worlds that shaped your imagination, whether through books, movies, or myths. It’s a destination where nostalgia isn’t required; curiosity is enough.
