The Value in Leveraging Food To Engage Globally

No doubt I am not the first to tell you that travel is one of the most enriching experiences you can enjoy.

While incredible views and engaging with the locals are valuable parts of any trip, one of the most tangible and memorable aspects of travel is the food. Rooted in the traditions, history, and people of a region, the connection between travel and food is profound.

It can also fuel anticipation for future trips when we create regional foods right in our own kitchens!

When I am out exploring the world, I encounter a variety of flavors, techniques, and ingredients that I may not be familiar with. From the döners in Germany to the stuffed cabbage rolls in Romania, each culinary experience tells a story, and I’ll usually pick up a cookbook so I can relive them at home.

By exploring these dishes, I can personally connect to the land’s history, climate, and resources, as well as dig deeper into the influences of neighboring regions.

Particularly in my European travels, I have noticed great representation of seasonal dishes, with significantly less preservatives. Countries like Bulgaria use a lot of fresh fruit and veggies in the spring and summer, while fall and winter are when the pickled and preserved ingredients start taking center stage.

Unfortunately, this also means that it is nearly impossible to get treats like this incredible sheep-goat blended cheese I tried in Slovenia over here in the States. Either I have to go back, or send someone to bring it back for me! No delivery available.

I am grateful for all the sweet and salty impressions that have created my global palette. And as you know, food has a particular ability to evoke memories and transport us back to specific places.

Baklava is always going to remind me of my husband’s enjoyment of it on our honeymoon in Greece.

Just seeing carambola, star fruit, takes me back to the many visits to my grandparent’s house in Florida, where their neighbor’s tree would practically be sinking under the weight of all the ripe fruit.

Those are just a few initial memories tied to these food experiences that come to mind. What about you? Are you remembering exotic destinations, or maybe even home?

Food is an essential part of a travel narrative, and informs our sense of place.

With innovations in communication, the world is more accessible than ever, with cooking featuring as an aspect of that!

Virtual cooking classes are an exciting opportunity to delve deeper into the cuisines of different cultures. They allow us to learn not just how to cook a dish but can provide insight into understanding its origins, significance, and variations.

Imagine joining a cooking class led by a local from the laid back country of Spain, learning to make authentic paella. Or picture yourself preparing a traditional Indian curry under the guidance of a cook from New Delhi, who shares the stories and perspectives you can only get from a local.

These classes not only equip you with culinary skills but also immerse you in the culture behind each recipe, even if you are joining in from home!

I’ve got a link to a short list of virtual cooking classes you can check out below. But if I haven’t already convinced you of the value, let me give you the rundown.

Accessible

No matter where you are in the world, you can connect with chefs and food enthusiasts from diverse cultures. Maybe you’ve done your research and want to ask about a recipe you can’t find anywhere. This is your chance!

Cultural Exchange

No need to become an au pair, virtual cooking classes provide a platform for cultural exchange without the responsibility of managing children! Ask questions and interact with your culinary guide to create a richer learning experience.

Variety

Are you trying to find a new way to cook chicken? That routine of salad, tacos, pizza, and grain bowls can really wear you down after a while. So spice it up! Possibly literally…peek the Thai class!

Community Building

Cooking classes often bring people together from different backgrounds, fostering a sense of community. By making and sharing a meal you’ve cooked with others, you can create connections that transcend geographical boundaries, whether that’s with classmates or your chef.

Convenience

You don’t even have to go outside! Well, maybe to get the ingredients, but you could even get those delivered! By cooking from your own kitchen, you can stay in your casual pants, replicate the experience at your own pace in the future, and impress your in-laws next time they’re visiting.

Foster curiosity in your family or friend group by checking out a virtual cooking class. Maximize 21st century living by taking the opportunity to explore global cuisines while developing your culinary skills. Maybe even try a few, and use this unique approach to choose the destination you want to visit next!
