For a long time, I severely underrated what the United States had to offer. Beaches, big cities, theme parks — those were the main characters in my domestic travel story. Then I stood on the edge of a canyon in Utah, and later on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic in Maine. My perspective got a whole lot wider.
Zion and Acadia are separated by thousands of miles, but together they reshaped the way I see my own country. They showed me that adventure here isn’t just possible; it’s everywhere. And I want to experience as much of it as I can.
Zion: Stepping Into the Desert
Zion National Park was my first real encounter with the desert. I didn’t know what to expect — sand and dust don’t exactly top my list of favorite things — but the scenery was amazing. Red walls of rock. Petroglyphs from art history textbooks now right before me. Local galleries and tasty Southwestern food gave the surrounding area a flavor that was new to me.
And then there was the hiking. Angels Landing is legendary for good reason. It’s not just a climb; it’s a series of hold-your-breath moments where you have to trust your footing, your grip, and your nerve. Reaching the top felt both humbling and exhilarating, a reward only earned by effort.
Zion invited me to step out of my comfort zone and see new challenges in the outdoors I had neglected before.
Acadia: Where Ocean Meets Stone
Acadia couldn’t look more different from Zion, but its effect on me was just as powerful. Here, jagged cliffs meet the Atlantic, and spruce forests spill down toward the sea. The air is often misty, filled with seaspray and fog. The sense of mystery in it and the rugged beauty of the granite coastline drew me in immediately.
The Beehive Trail stands out as a favorite. Its iron rungs and ledges are both nerve-wracking and fun, and the payoff — sweeping views of sand, surf, and forest — is worth every shaky step.
I love how Acadia balances wildness with accessibility. Bar Harbor’s restaurants and shops make it easy to refuel after a day on the trails, while still keeping you close to the park’s quiet corners.
What These Parks Taught Me About U.S. Travel
Standing in places like these reminds you how massive and varied this country is. It’s not all highways and strip malls. There are deserts and icebergs, snowy peaks and quiet coves, and cultures shaped by each landscape.
Exploring them helped me see travel at home as something just as rich as going abroad — sometimes even more so, because the surprises are closer than you think.
Tips for Experiencing the Parks in Comfort
- Consider Private or Guided Tours: They’re a smart way to see more than the average visitor, whether that’s sunrise access to a hidden overlook or a naturalist-led hike.
- Time Your Trip Well: Research seasonal closures and crowd patterns so you don’t miss iconic sights. (Angels Landing requires permits now, and parts of Acadia’s Park Loop Road close in winter or wildlife mating seasons.)
- Balance Adventure with Rest: A challenging hike is best followed by a soft bed, good meal, and maybe a local craft cocktail. Luxury inns, boutique lodges, and well-chosen resorts let you enjoy the outdoors without giving up comfort.
- Don’t Skip the Towns Nearby: Bar Harbor’s lobster rolls or Moab’s art galleries add texture to the trip and they’re part of the story.
The Value of a Thoughtfully Planned Trip
One thing I’d recommend from visiting parks coast to coast: the experience is improved when someone else handles the details. Routes, permits, lodging, dining, transfers — when these are taken care of, you get to focus on the moments that matter: a sunrise over the canyon, the first glimpse of ocean beyond the trees, the smile of someone you love when you both reach the top.
This isn’t the time to be cutting corners; it’s an investment in a trip where your only job is to experience it fully.
